Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate and divide by 100 to get the tax amount, then add it to the original price. Example: $100 × 15% = $15 tax → total = $115. Use the "Add Tax" tab above to do this instantly.
Divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + tax rate ÷ 100). Example: $115 with 15% tax → pre-tax = $115 ÷ 1.15 = $100. Tax amount = $15. Use the "Remove Tax" tab above.
A tax-exclusive price is shown before tax — tax is added at checkout (common in the US). A tax-inclusive price already includes tax — the sticker price is what you pay (standard for VAT in Europe and GST in Australia/NZ).
VAT (Value Added Tax) is levied at each stage of production, common across Europe. Sales tax is only added at the final point of sale, common in the US. As a consumer the maths is identical — this calculator works for VAT, GST, HST, or any flat-rate tax.
Tax amount = Total − (Total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)). Example: $115 total at 15% → tax = $115 − ($115 ÷ 1.15) = $15. The "Remove Tax" mode shows both figures side by side.
